Overview of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed of dog that started in the United Kingdom several hundred years ago. The dog breed changed drastically in the 17th century, but has remained pretty much the same ever since. This dog is quite popular in the United States, including being the sixth most popular dog in San Francisco and New York City, and the eighth most popular dog in Nashville and Minneapolis-St. Paul.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is extremely patient, loving, eager to please, and has a lot of energy. They are very effective therapy dogs due to their gentle nature and have a lot to offer the prospective owner.

These are very small dogs that stand between 12 and 13 inches with proportionate weight of between 13 to 18 pounds. They can either be black and tan, chestnut markings on white, black and tan and white together, or entirely chestnut sometimes with very small markings.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Food and Health

There are quite a few things to keep in mind when it comes to Cavalier Spaniels health. Most health experts recommend that you prepare your dog’s diet at home made up of raw meat and fruits and vegetables whenever possible. However, that means understanding all of the different nutrients that need to go into your dog’s diet and this can be less than pragmatic. If you do not prepare your dog’s diet at home, then at least keep in mind that you should not be feeding your spaniel dry dog food like high protein grain dog food . With some dogs, as long as the dog food is selected carefully, you can do fine with dry dog food like health natural dry dog food, but because of the carbohydrates, you need to avoid it with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

So, you want to go with biologically appropriate, frozen, canned or freeze-dried food. There are a lot of great brands out there that you can rely on for the type of food that your dog needs and most of what goes into it should be high-quality, human-grade real meat products with fruits and vegetables. Meat should always be the first ingredient in your dog’s food, and they should be getting some of their food from fat as well. There should never be fillers like grain, wheat, or corn in your dog’s food like grain-free canned dog food. You also want to find out exactly how many calories you should be feeding your spaniel based upon age, gender, size, and activity level.

One of the problems that can occur if you give your dog too many calories is obesity. This is especially important for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They are predisposed to obesity according to research done in 1986 and confirmed as recently as 2013. Of course, you can combat this to a large degree by avoiding feeding your dog carbohydrates of any sort. Experts believe that carbohydrates are not required by pets like they are with humans, and as long as you give them enough calories of non-carbohydrate dog food then it is unlikely that their health will suffer.

There are a few health conditions that you should be concerned with when it comes to Cavaliers including mitral valve disease which can cause heart failure, hip dysplasia, luxating patellas and some potential hearing disorders and vision problems.

Since Cavaliers are genetically predisposed towards so many illnesses, it is a really good idea to have pet insurance. Pet insurance protects your pet by providing them with the health plan that can make certain that they are taken care of if they do get sick. With pet insurance, you may not have to pay out-of-pocket for your pet’s veterinary bills, but instead pay a co-pay or a discounted amount like you would with your human health plan. For a breed like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel this can be a major benefit because the chances of them getting sick and needing surgery, medication or regular veterinary visits are a lot higher then with most of the breeds out there.

Leashes and Collars for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

When it comes to dog leashes and collars for your pet, there are some things to keep in mind regarding this specific breed. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds in the United Kingdom, and they are used for companionship as well as for sport. The dog collars like anti bark collar that you choose for this breed should be lightweight and comfortable. This is a very easy to manage breed, so you should not need any sort of corrective collar. Of course, you should never use collars that are uncomfortable or cause pain, but in the case of the Cavalier, the best bet is to go with the leather collar like leather dog collars  or nylon dog collar, because both of these are lightweight and soft.

As for which leashes you get, it really doesn’t matter. Many people prefer to get matching leash and dog collar sets, and if that is the case then when you choose your dog collar like chain martingale collar you will have already chosen your leash – assuming it is available. There is really nothing that you need to keep in mind in particular when it comes to choosing the right leash like leather dog leash for your dog, but you may want to look into retractable leashes that will allow your dog some more room if they need it or figure out which size is going to be best for walking your dog. Cavaliers are people pleasers by nature, so you will not need to tug hard at their collar to get them to obey and you may want to go with a dog harness instead.

Best Crates, Beds, and Doghouses for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

As for choosing the living situation for your dog, it will depend upon where you are going to be placing these items. It also may depend a great deal upon what part of the country you are in. The first thing that you have to do is decide where your dog is going to primarily spend their time. If you have an outside dog, then they are going to need a dog house. A dog house like insulated dog house not only provides shade in the summertime, it also provides warmth in the winter. If you live in a particularly cold area of the country, then you may need to provide additional heating in the winter so that your dog does not freeze.

If your dog is going to be living indoors, then a dog house may not be that important. However, you will still need to have a dog bed like ultimate pet bed for them that they can call their own and go to when they need privacy. You will probably also need a dog crate. You can use a dog crate as dog travel crate for training as sort of a timeout vehicle, and of course you can use it for transportation as well. Some dogs do not do well when they are left alone for hours on end, so you may have to actually leave them in their crate while you are at work. You also need a dog bed like orthopedic dog bed that is comfortable and out of the way so that your dog can lay down and relax and have their own space when they want it.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Toys

There are lots of toys out there that your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will enjoy playing with. Your Cavalier will spend a great deal of time in your lap, but that does not mean that they do not need exercise. In fact, these dogs need close to an hour of exercise a day in order to stay healthy. But the good news is, there are lots of dog toys out there that will allow you to play with your dog and have fun while still giving them the exercise that they need.

There are certain types of toys that work best with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. With some dogs, you have to be careful which toys you give them because they are overly aggressive and will tear things up, often spreading stuffing from plush toys or pieces of destructible toys throughout the house. Luckily, that is not the case with your Cavalier. They are very playful and will get pretty rambunctious with their toys, but they are not so energetic and aggressive that they tear up toys easily. That means that you should be safe giving them plush toys or anything else that can make a mess.

Of course, you still want to make sure that your toy is as durable as possible. Your King Charles will chew on the toy over a long period of time and that can mean that they wear out fairly quickly. You also want to consider interactive toys like twin pack dog toy with this type of dog, because they really enjoy spending time with humans and will love playing with you much more than they will playing on their own. It also provides an opportunity to bond, and when they are alone they will have less anxiety when they play with their toys because they are used to playing with their toys with you. Interactive puzzle toys like dispensing dog puzzle toy, balls like kannon ball launcher , plush toys like plush squeaking toys , noisemakers and lots of other toy types are great for this breed of dog.

Grooming Insights for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel owners

When it comes to grooming there are some unique things about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that you need to keep in mind. The first thing is that their fur is thick and has a tendency to get matted, attract burrs, or clump up. That means that it is important to brush like cleaning slicker brush them regularly, but you have to be careful because it can be pretty challenging to brush their hair out without causing discomfort. Your dog should also be trimmed regularly, especially in the warmer months where having thick fur can be uncomfortable, and you can either trim the hair on the top of their paws or make sure to brush it so that it does not get tangled up.

Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should only be bathed about once a month unless your dog spends lots of time outdoors and needs bathing more often than that. One thing that you’ll want to keep in mind is that they have to be shampooed twice like natural pet shampoo. That’s because oil that they produce and creates sort of a waterproof seal. The first shampoo breaks down those oils and the second will actually clean their coat. You can rub your dog down with a towel after a bath, but make sure not to rub too hard because their fur will get tangled.

You also want to have their nails trimmed like tiny trim once in a while. Many people prefer to go to the groomers for this because it is a delicate process and most pet owners are not equipped to handle it. Another area that you will want to trim is your dog’s ears, but this is also a really sensitive area and many people feel better leaving it to the groomers.
