Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breed Overview

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi doesn’t seem like it, but it was actually bred to be a cattle herding dog. However, this low-to-the-ground pup is much more popular now as a companion to those living in apartments and other small spaces. “Corgi” is Welsh for “dwarf dog,” and this is a pretty good description. The Pembroke Corgi has short, stubby legs that only raise the belly a couple inches off of the ground, and they have sharp faces with long ears.

One of the most famous people to have Welsh Corgis is the Queen of England. Her Majesty stopped breeding her Corgis in 2012 so that her dogs would not outlive her, and her last Corgi died in April of 2018. As you might imagine, Welsh Corgis are popular in the United Kingdom, but they are also popular in the United States. They are found mostly in warmer climates so states like South Carolina, Florida, and California are hotspots for this breed.

Corgi Food and Health

When it comes to nutrition for your Pembroke Welsh Corgis, there are several things to keep in mind. First of all, your dog is going to respond better to certain diets then to others. This is simply a matter of genetics. Corgis are naturally attracted to certain types of food because that’s the type of food that they are used to eating. When corgis were hunting dogs in Pembrokeshire in Wales, they ate rabbit, beef, and lots of other meats like nutro adult cuts in gravy wet dog food chicken & beef. Of course, other things had to be added to their diet as well including fruits and vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. They also had fish added to their diet.

That’s why it is such a good idea to look for these types of meats and vegetables when you are feeding your Pembroke Welsh Corgi. However, the most important thing that you can do for your dog is to make sure that meat is the number one ingredient in whichever foods you choose. Your dog needs a lot of protein, and many experts recommend that they get as much as 20% of their diet from protein.

Not only does your dog need to get most of their diet from protein, but they also need to get a fairly significant portion of their diet from fats and from fiber. Your dog needs fiber for his or her digestive system, and a blend of Omega fats will allow your dog to have a healthy and shiny coat. Of course, you also need to be concerned about the vitamins and minerals that your dog needs every day. If you go with a premium dog food brand, then you are almost certain of getting the right blend of vitamins and minerals for that particular breed. when it comes to Pembroke Welsh Corgis, you will have to examine the dog food that you are considering to find out if it is recommended for that breed.

Pembrokes can live between 12 and 15 years, and they are a dwarf breed which means that there are certain health conditions that they are susceptible to that you need to be aware of because diet can affect them. Some of the potential health conditions that Pembroke Welsh Corgis can suffer from include monorchidism, Von Willebrand’s disease, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy (DM), and inherited eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy. You also need to count your Pembrokes calories because they are susceptible to obesity and that can lend itself to other conditions.

Many dog owners do not realize that the best things they can get for their pet is pet insurance. Pet insurance protects you and your pet against anything that they might require as far as medical treatment. That means that if your dog is involved in an accident, contracts a disease or requires any other sort of emergency veterinary treatment, or regular treatment for that matter, that you are protected and you will not have to pay out-of-pocket for it. This can mean big savings, and pet insurance is so inexpensive that it is worth getting it every time.

Leashes and Collars for your Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Although Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s are not that strong, they do tend to be very slippery. That means that the dog collar that you select for them needs to actually fit and ensure that they are not going to be able to wriggle out of it when they get caught up. However, it also means that you do not want to give your Pembroke Welsh Corgi the opportunity to remain tethered to anything for long periods of time because they will attempt to wriggle out of their collar if that is the case. In most instances, they will either have success at it or they will do serious damage to themselves try. That’s why you need to make sure that you have both a good collar and that you do not leave your dog tied somewhere.

As far as leashes go, there are several things that you keep in mind when it comes to Corgis. For one thing, you should think about the material that you want your lease to be made out of. You want something that is sturdy and solid and that is not going to slip out of your hand, but you also want something that is not too heavy for your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to call around with them.

There are several different types of materials that collars and dog leashes are made from. Many people go with leather collars and leashes such as vcalabashor custom leather collar and fairwin leather dog leash, not only because they look terrific, but also because they are very durable. However, for a small dog like the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, you may want to go with a nylon leash like reflective nylon dog leash that is more flexible. The leather collar may be uncomfortable because it is stiff and they have very small necks.

Best Crates, Beds, and Doghouses for Pembroke Welsh Corgis

You also want to choose the right dog crate and the right dog house for your Pembroke Welsh corgi. This is not difficult if you know what to look for. You also have to know what you plan on using the dog crate and the dog house for. For example, many people use their dog crate for training, which means that their dog only goes into it in certain situations where they are being punished. This is not the proper way to use a dog crate though, because your Pembroke Welsh Corgi will learn to hate the crate and you while a very difficult time loading them into it. Instead, you should make getting into the crate a pleasurable experience. This is done through training from an early age by using dog treats to entice them into the crate.

You also want to make sure that their crate is comfortable. That usually means including a dog bed inside the crate that your dog can use to take a nap. Smart owners will leave their crates open during the day with a dog bed inside so that their dog can take a nap whenever they want to. You also want to choose the right dog house like tangkula dog house outdoor. Dog houses are used primarily outside, which means that they provide shade in the summer and insulation from the cold in the winter. Even if your dog only goes out for exercise or to use the bathroom, you may still want to have a dog house for them to use.

Corgi Toys

When it comes to choosing the right toys for your Pembroke Welsh Corgi, there are definitely some things that you want to keep in mind. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are fairly active dogs, but they are not so active that you have to give them the maximum amount of exercise. An hour a day or so will do them just fine. In fact, most pet owners give them between 30 and 45 minutes of exercise per day. However, in order to keep that schedule, you may need some toys to play with them and entice them to perform that exercise. That’s exactly what we’ll be covering in this section. You want to choose the right toys for this breed because if you use the wrong ones than they are not going to complete their daily exercise and this could be detrimental for their health.

The first thing that you need to understand is that Corgis love chewing. Besides their own pleasure, chewing is really good for their dental health. When they chew on something, they are able to remove plaque and debris from their teeth that can sit in there and rot and cause gum disease later on. However, since they love chewing so much, it also means that they are capable of destroying certain toys that will not last against long-term chewing. That’s why you need to either replace toys often or buy toys that are durable and made to last in the first place. You also want to buy chew toys like natural elk antler dog chew that will give them some sort of reward or pleasure. Ideally, chewing toys will dispense a treat after eating chewed on for so long, but you may have to go with noisemakers instead that simply squeak when they are played with.

These toys should be durable, accessible and fun, and you may want to include interactive toys like starmark interactive dog toy that work by themselves so that your dog will continue to play when you are out of the house Pembroke Corgis are not usually prone to anxiety, but they can be destructive upon occasion. You want to make sure that does not happen by choosing the right toys.
