Overview of the Boston Terrier Breed

The Boston Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in the United States. They are small dogs that can either be black, brindle, or seal-colored with white markings. They were accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1893 as a non-sporting breed and they are even the state dog of Massachusetts. Besides also being the mascot of Boston University, the Boston Terrier is also the mascot of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

These dogs are very gentle and highly intelligent and can easily be trained. They have large eyes that are set widely apart and have short tails that come in either a corkscrew shape or a slight curl. Boston Terriers are eager to please and have a fairly high energy level. They make perfect apartment dogs or dogs for older people because they do not need a lot of space, and are not so rambunctious that the elderly cannot care for them.

Boston Terrier Food and Health

When it comes to the right dog food for Boston Terriers, there are several things to keep in mind. First of all, no matter what anyone tells you, all dogs have the same basic requirements. In other words, they require a great deal of protein, they require a significant amount of their diet to be from fat, and they need all of the vitamins and minerals that are required for their bodily systems to function properly. In order for this to happen, you have to choose the right dog food. Most of the premium brands out there that are recommended for a specific breed will do a pretty good job of making sure that your dog gets everything that they need. However, there are some things that you need to keep in mind when it comes to dog food for specific breeds like Boston Terriers.

One thing to understand is that Boston Terriers have lower calorie requirements than many of the medium dogs out there. There recommended calories per day are around 660. However, that number can vary based upon several factors. For example, puppies need more calories than adult dogs. Seniors need fewer calories. In addition, things like size, activity level, the type of dog food you’re feeding and several other factors will also be considerations. The best way to proceed is to feed your Boston Terrier dog foods that are specifically intended for small to medium-size breeds and to go with the puppy formula or the senior formula whenever possible. Puppy formula sometimes has more nutrients that puppies need to develop properly, and senior dog foods can contain glucosamine and chondroitin which is really good for joints and immune health.

As for the vitamins and minerals that your dog needs to stay healthy, there are a lot of them out there. It is almost impossible to determine what vitamins and minerals your dog needs. However, the good news is that the premium dog brands that are available these days have already done the homework for you. They have already added all of the vitamins and minerals and other nutrients that your dog needs to stay healthy. You just have to choose the right brand. Don’t choose anything that has fillers like grain, corn, wheat, or other products.

You also want to be aware of certain health problems that Boston Terriers can experience. Some of the most common health problems include back injuries due to the elongated back and the difficulty in carrying weight, corneal ulcers due to the placement of the eyes, and complications that can happen during pregnancy that require a cesarean birth. You may want to go with insurance for your dog because Boston Terriers can definitely have health problems, and making sure that you have health insurance for your dog to pay for it is one of the primary responsibilities of a dog owner. The bottom line is that you need to be aware of certain health conditions and nutritional requirements specifically for Boston Terriers. If you know what these are, you will have a much easier time making sure that your dog stays healthy.

Leashes and Collars for your Boston Terrier

No matter what breed of dog you have, you want to avoid certain types of dog collars and dog leashes such as remote trainer and nylon dog leash. The bad collars out there include the choke chains, shock collars, and prong collars or e-collar remote dog training that cause your dog pain. You do not need to cause your dog discomfort in order to teach them a lesson. In fact, when it comes to Boston Terriers, you may want not want to use a collar on them at all. That’s because some dog breeds do not respond well to collars because they cause the dog discomfort or send the wrong message.

In the case of the Boston Terrier, they have a very short muzzle and that means that they have more trouble breathing than dogs that have longer muzzles. When you cut off their air with a collar that tightens up around their trachea, then you may be cutting off their air supply completely because they already may have trouble breathing. That’s why many dog owners prefer to use the dog harness on these dogs because they do not put strain on the neck and throat which can cut off the breathing. Instead, the harness applies pressure regularly and evenly over the entire body.

As for which leash you use, this is really a matter of personal preference, but you should try to avoid chain leashes if it all possible. Not only will these be heavier for your dog to haul around with them, but it could actually slip through your hands and cause injury or more easily or get snagged on something.

Best Crates, Beds, and Doghouses for Boston Terriers

Now, let’s discuss your dog is living situation. There are many things to keep in mind when it comes to deciding where your dog is going to rest his or her head at night and what kind of dog crate, dog house or bed they need such as crate indoor and outdoor, dog house with dark frame and dog bed lounge sofa. If your dog house is outdoors, then you definitely want to make sure that it is weatherproof and it is located in an area where they can get some privacy. The dog house is sort of like your dog’s den. When they go out to hang out in their dog house, they may want privacy which means that you do not want your dog house located right in the center of all activity.

However, dogs also need to feel safe in their dog house. That means that they will investigate their dog house and make sure it is roomy enough and then turn around to face the front so that they can face any threats that come through the door head-on. In order to size your dog for your dog house, measure them and then measure the dog house and make sure that they have at least a couple of extra inches on both the top and the sides so that they can enter the dog house while standing, turn around completely in a circle and then lay down if they choose to.

Boston Terrier Toys

There lots of toys out there the Boston Terriers will enjoy. Boston Terriers make great companions, and they are very sweet dogs, but they are also extremely energetic and you definitely want to choose toys that stimulate them mentally and physically. Boston Terriers are not just companions these days; they are actually participants in a large number of canine sports.

One of the reasons for this is how agile the Boston Terrier is. Dog agility competitions are often stocked with Boston Terriers, and they also excel at obedience training, tracking, flyball, weight pulling and barn hunt among others. If you’re going to get them toys, then you should choose toys such as west paw zogoflex toy that are going to allow them to showcase this agility and sharpen their mental skills as well. There are lots of toys out there that will do this, including puzzle toys for dogs that dispense a treat when the puzzle is solved. These are terrific for sharpening your dog’s mind and getting them motivated to play.

Of course, the toys that you choose will depend upon the area that you live in. Boston Terriers will thrive and just about any environment, but the toys that you choose will depend upon whether you plan on using them outdoors in the snow, outdoors in the summertime or indoors. For example, an automatic dog ball launcher may not be practical indoors, but they can be great outdoors if your Boston Terrier enjoys playing fetch.

The thing that you want to be aware of when it comes to Boston Terriers is that they are extremely energetic and committed to their toys. That means that you do not give them toys that they can tear up and spread over the house. For example, if you give them a stuffed animal to chew on that has stuffing inside, within a few hours or days that stuffing is going to be spread from one room to another. Boston Terriers like playing with balls and you can get them to play fetch pretty much any time, but keep in mind that smaller objects are really narrow toys should be avoided because they may get lodged in your dog’s mouth.

Grooming Insights for Boston Terrier owners

When it comes to grooming, you should be bathing your Boston Terrier on average about every 2 to 3 weeks. Bathing is essential to maintain a healthy skin and coat because of the smoothness of the Boston Terrier fur. You also want to choose the right products. The best way to start your grooming is to use a blowdryer with low heat to loosen up the dirt and dander from the skin. Use a facial cleanser for the face; paying particular attention to any wrinkles that your dog has because they can have bacteria. You can do a facial scrub on weeks that you are not giving your dog a bath if you want.

Some products that you may want to look into include hypoallergenic shampoo, flea and tick shampoo such as natural pet shampoo which will usually keep dog safe for about 12 weeks and a sturdy dog brush that you can use to brush your dog’s coat after you blow dry it. Some of the other recommendations from groomers include a hydrating spray in order to keep this smooth coat in top condition and a regular circular massage with a grooming mitt in order to release the natural oils.

If you like, you can brush your Boston Terrier every couple of days. This will allow you to remove loose hairs and dead skin cells before the bath. For the most part, Boston Terriers like being brushed as long as the brush does not snag their fur and pull at it, and you can even take them to the groomers once in a while to have their nails trimmed or get a haircut in the hotter summer months.

Boston Terrier Accessories

You may also want to look into getting accessories for your dog depending upon what your needs are. For example, you want to make sure that your dog gets plenty of exercise and if you cannot take them for walks as often as you like, then you might want to consider an outdoor dog kennel or invisible fence to allow them to run around the yard. You can even get an electronic dog door that will allow them to go in and out whenever they want. These doors are very advanced now and use various technologies like radio waves or microchips to allow your dog access without letting other animals in.

You may also want to consider some Boston Terrier accessories for yourself. Lots of people who adore their dogs get handbags, keychains, T-shirts and lots of other accessories that have either their dog’s actual picture or a generic picture of a Boston Terrier so that people see what kind of dog you have and you get reminded every time you look at that particular object. There are lots of choices out there when it comes to choosing accessories, whether for your dog or for yourself, and they can definitely help you improve the quality of your life as well as the life of your dog.
