Teaching your puppy to sit should be one of the first things that you aim to do. You want to teach your puppy to sit because it is a good tool that you will need to use for a variety of reasons and in a bunch of different scenarios. When your puppy knows how to sit on command, you will be able to use it as a means to build off of and to really train your puppy as well as possible. Below, we will discuss some of the key tips to train your puppy to sit.

Tips To Train Your Puppy

Come Up With Training Times

One of the best things that you can do in order to teach your dog to sit properly is to plan out segments where you will be able to train your puppy. You want to train your puppy in segments of 10 to 15 minutes. Anything more than 10 to 15 minutes and you will begin to lose your puppy’s attention and it is going to cause issues with your ability to train your puppy effectively.

Find The Optimal Reward

Once you have planned out a time to train your puppy, you will want to figure out what your puppy’s optimal reward is. You should be able to do this by looking to see what your puppy seems most invested in. You can try out different treats with your puppy and see which one he reacts to the best. Along with this, your puppy might desire playtime or a specific toy as his/her optimal reward. Figure out what it is and it will make training your puppy much easier.

Clicker

If you are looking for a fool-proof method to train your puppy, you will want to consider using a dog training clicker device. By using something that can create such a distinguished sound, you will be able to maximize your chances of rewarding at the right time. Clicker training makes training your puppy very easy because it makes it effortless to be able to communicate exactly when you should be rewarding your puppy and it leaves no room for miscommunication.

Hold The Treat Or Toy Above Your Puppy’s Head

One of the easiest ways to get your puppy to learn the sit command is by forcing them to put themselves into a position where they would naturally sit. By placing the treat or toy all the way above your dog’s head, it is going to encourage your dog to naturally sit. Therefore, it will give you an opportune time to reward your dog and to tell them the ‘sit’ command. This can make teaching your dog the sit command very easy.

Intermittent Rewards

You are going to want to be sure that you are weaning off the rewarding of sitting each and every time because you want your dog to understand that they are not going to be getting rewarded every time they complete the action. By utilizing an intermittent reward system where you reward your dog with only verbal praise every other time, you will be able to ensure that you are able to get your dog to do what you want without necessarily having to show or hold a reward in your hand. Eventually, your puppy will learn that the rewards can come when they least expect it which will encourage them to continue to listen and obey.

There are plenty of things that you can do to improve your ability to teach your dog how to sit properly. By following the tips above, you should be able to experience success with your efforts to get your dog to sit on command.
