What is Otomax? Otomax is a medication prescribed for a dog’s ear infection. Ear infections are most commonly caused by various kinds of bacteria. Ear infections can become serious if not treated early because it can potentially travel to your pet’s ear canal.

Ear infections can give your dog a painful and hard time. So if your dog needs to be cured of one, then you might consider talking to your veterinarian about letting your pet take Otomax.

WHAT OTOMAX DOES

Otomax helps relieve symptoms like inflammation, pain, and itching, along with fungal activities that are related to infections. Otomax comes in either drops or ointment form.

PROPER DOSAGE OF OTOMAX

If your dog is suffering from an ear infection and your veterinarian prescribed Otomax, you need to be sure of the following:

  • Make sure to clean your dog’s ears thoroughly. Your veterinarian may even ask you to use an ear cleaning solution. The ear area should be clean, dry, and free from any extra hair as well.
  • Inform your veterinarian if your dog is taking any other medications before letting it take Otomax.
  • The general rule is it put four drops of Otomax in your pet’s ears. Do this twice a day if your pet is less than thirty pounds. If your pet weighs more, then you would ideally need to put eight drops into your pet’s ears twice a day.
  • Make sure that you follow your veterinarian’s instructions or those that are written in the package. Your dog overdosing with Otomax can potentially become dangerous.

Make sure that you store the medication properly, and be informed about possible side effects.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF OTOMAX

Not all dogs react positively to Otomax, and make sure to watch out for the following side effects on your dog:

  • Gentamicin, an active ingredient in Otomax, can lead to ear damage or kidney damage if it comes in contact with a wound or damaged skin. Make sure that your dog doesn’t have any of these two when applying Otomax.
  • Other side effects may include loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration or increased thirst, and frequent urination.
  • Otomax can also cause diarrhea, or cause redness at the site of application.

If you notice any of these side effects, make sure that you inform your veterinarian right away so that you can protect your pet’s ears and overall health.

PREVENTING EAR INFECTIONS

Dogs can be susceptible to ear infections, especially if various elements or objects get into your pet’s ears. This can also happen if your pet’s ears aren’t cleaned or taken care of properly. Ear mites or yeast infections also cause ear infections as well. If your dog gets an ear infection and it isn’t treated quickly, it can potentially lead to hearing loss. Make sure you check your dog’s ears regularly and check for signs or indications of inflammation or possible ear infections. Below are some tips on how to properly take care of your dog’s ears:

  • Make sure to use good-quality ear cleaning or cleansing solutions.
  • Don’t insert earbuds into your dog’s ear canal as this may lead to ear damage.
  • Trim your pet’s ear hair and make sure to do it properly to prevent any injuries.
  • Keep your pet hygienic, and free from various parasites like ticks, fleas, or ear mites so as not to increase your pet’s susceptibility to ear infections.
