For dog owners, there's almost nothing better than going on a long walk with their furry friend. While the pleasure of being outdoors with your dog is pretty undeniable, it can be difficult to walk your precious pooch without worrying about them running away or getting lost.

To help keep your dog safe and secure, you really need a good collar and leash combo. And a high-quality leash and collar can make it easier for you to keep up with your dog's antics while still allowing them the freedom of exploring their surroundings.

Before buying these products for your furry buddy though, you need to consider a few important factors.

Locking Mechanism

Before purchasing something, you should check the locking mechanism of the product you’re looking at. If the locking system isn't secure, you could end up losing your dog when you’re out on a walk. From O-rings and D-rings to belt loops and swivel snap hooks, collar and leash designs use a wide range of locking mechanisms.
While O-rings and D-rings can offer more control when you’re walking multiple dogs, swivel snap hooks are usually more secure and can be ideal even for more energetic or mischievous pups. And besides a safe locking mechanism, a quality product should also have a quick-release clasp, which should help you to easily remove the leash during emergencies.

Leash Length

You also need to consider the length of a leash when picking something out for your pooch. It should be long enough to not restrict their movements, but not long enough to become a tripping hazard.

A good rule of thumb can be buying a leash that is twice the length of your dog's body or at least 6 feet long. This should give your dog plenty of room to roam around while still making it easy to keep track of their movements.

Durability

You don't want something that’ll break easily if your dog pulls too hard, and you don’t want a product that gets frayed after a few uses either. So, you should find something made of strong materials like nylon or leather. These materials should be able to withstand intense pulling, chewing, and tugging without showing signs of wear and tear.
