Tips to Get Your Dog Sleep Through the Night
Here are a few methods to ensure your dog gets a good night’s sleep — and so do you!
Make sure your buddy is drained
Every dog deserves to be taken for a stroll in the evening. Though every dog has a different breed and personality, you must ensure that your dog is exhausted enough to drag himself through the door by the time you are back home. Nonetheless, if your dog is still pumped up and hopping around, you may want to walk; you might want to walk a few more blocks to tire him out. Also, if you own a big dog and it seems impossible to tire him out, how about getting skates or acquiring a bicycle?
Feeding time
It would be good if your pup eats his meal early in the evening, so he doesn’t need to be up at midnight to take a poo. Many specialists suggest that feeding dogs at later hours are beneficial as they tend to sleep well with a full tummy. While this is true, if they are fed late, they will have to wake up in later hours to relieve themselves, which will essentially disturb their sleep — and possibly yours too.
Begin crate training
Begin by training your puppy to sleep in his own crate. It will also discourage them from roaming about in late hours. While many love to sleep with their pups, crate training is essential to break negative behaviors, such as getting up mid-night. This whole practice is to create a safe space for your dog where they can feel at ease and lie down whenever they want. But, never use crates as a means to discipline your pup. Once your dog starts accepting and sleeping in the crate as part of their evening routine, you can get your pup to sleep with you again.
Consult a vet
If your dog still has trouble with his sleep, you should take him to the doctor for a thorough examination and diagnosis of any underlying medical conditions — especially if you have an older dog. Explain to the vet any physical or behavioral changes you’ve observed in your dogs, such as a change in appetite, activity, or sleep schedule. The veterinarian may prescribe certain medications, such as melatonin for dogs or other drugs.
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by pineal glands that assist in regulating circadian rhythms. It is safe to use in both humans as well as animals. Supplementing this hormone will likely regulate your pet’s sleep. Melatonin for dogs is usually prescribed to treat hyperactivity, separation anxiety, sleep cycle regulation, cognitive disorders, and epilepsy.
