Keeping a small dog safe in your yard
Most dogs spend time outdoors as they use the restroom or protect the property. Although the yard is often considered to be the dog’s domain, it can still be a place where their health and safety is put at risk. If you want to keep a small dog safe in your yard, there are a few necessary tips to follow for peace of mind.
Monitor the Weather
The outdoor environment is typically safe for domesticated pets but can put them at risk if harsh weather arrives at certain times of the year. From hail to heatwaves, there are times when your pet can be affected by the weather. As a pet owner, you’ll need to be proactive about checking the weather conditions each day and bringing your small dog indoors when the weather isn’t comfortable outside. The animal can become affected by the extreme temperatures if they are left outdoors for too long. They should also have access to enough water on warm days to ensure they stay hydrated. Having a backyard patio with a cover will prove to be useful to protect them from rain during the colder months of the year.
Inspect the Fence
One of the most common ways small dogs and pets are capable of escaping the property is through loose boards, cracks and holes present in the fence. Make it a point to inspect the fence each week to ensure the materials are secure and in good condition. Look for any areas where the dog has attempted to dig, which can allow them to crawl underneath the fence and escape. Keep the dog indoors until the repairs are made. A lock should also be used on a gate to ensure it’s always closed and doesn’t swing open from the wind.
Remove Toxic Plants
Many different plants present in the yard can be toxic and threaten your pet’s safety. Owners are often not aware the plants can affect the health of their dog with contact. You’ll need to remove peonies, mums, hydrangeas, tulips, wisteria, apples, carnations, ivy and geraniums. Shamrocks, Lily of the valley and even daisies should be removed immediately.
