How to Choose the Right Hypoallergenic Dog Food
When trying to pick the right food for a dog with allergies or a sensitive stomach, what should you be looking out for?
On the one hand, it is always a good idea to look for dog foods with minimal ingredients. The reason for this is simple. First: the fewer the ingredients, the less “work” your dog’s digestion has to do. They should be able to process what they’ve eaten without having the same upset stomach symptoms because everything is separated out and a lot simpler. Second: a dog food with fewer ingredients has less chance of including something that a dog might be allergic to. Not only that, but a dog food with fewer ingredients makes it easier for you to then rule out certain culprits as you try to identify what might be responsible.
Another thing to look for when choosing dog foods for dogs with allergies, is that the “common culprits” that cause allergies are removed. These include things like gluten, soy, and corn. Some dogs are even allergic to different sources of protein.
Finally, you should try to find dog foods that will still tick all the other boxes. That means you want a formulation that will provide plenty of nutrition in the form of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. And, of course, it means you should try and find something that your dog will enjoy to eat!
