Dogs are interesting creatures. While they can be cute and adorable to their owners, they can be hostile and fierce to strangers, too. They show a wide range of emotions, and owners love dressing them up in different ways to give them different looks. Few match the simplicity and style of the chain collar, however, and the best dog chain collars are designed to make your dog stand out no matter what.

While chain collars used to be a method for keeping dogs in check and disciplined, many dog owners instead use these collars for style only and are used as such. If you prefer more positive reinforcement for your pet, then these aesthetic collars are a great type of collar for them to wear. You can make even the tiniest of chihuahuas look like the fiercest of bulldogs with a simple outfit change.

Best Dog Chain Collar Buyer’s Guide

Dog chain collars are more aesthetic than they are functional, but they’re still important enough to consider carefully when buying nonetheless. Here’s a quick rundown on how to find the best dog collar for your pet.

What Is a Dog Chain Collar?

A dog chain collar is a type of collar that is made out of a metallic chain. These chains are often made out of stainless steel and plated with various different metals, such as gold. Dog chain collars can be used for training or simply for aesthetic purposes.

How to Pick a Quality Dog Chain Color

Look at the color

The color of the chain is probably the first thing people notice when looking at it, so you need to be sure it’s a color you love. Most dog chain collars come in metallic colors, such as gold or silver, while they’re actually made of stainless steel. This is mainly done for two reasons. Firstly, pure gold and silver are much more expensive, and plating the chains instead can save you and the manufacturer some money. Secondly, pure gold is easily malleable, which is terrible for everyday use, which is why stainless steel is an ideal substitute.

Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to gold, silver, or any other metallic color for that matter. There are other colors available, such as black, which look great on chains despite not looking “metallic” in a sense. The color you pick could also match what you usually wear for some stylish pairings.

Find a link style

Chains don’t always look the same, and chain-link styles vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, the popular Cuban chain link is used in many forms of chain jewelry, and as such is also popular among dog chain collars. You don’t necessarily need to use Cuban chains, however – there are other link styles that may appeal to you. All you need to do is find the right one for your dog. Fortunately, most manufacturers only produce chains that don’t hurt your dog’s neck, so you’ll be fine no matter what you buy.

Choose the right size

Finally, picking a size is very important when finding a chain for your dog. No matter how stylish or fancy it looks, it won’t amount to anything if your dog can’t wear it, or it can wear it but at the cost of comfort. The last thing you’d want is for your dog to feel choked 24/7, so you should find a collar that’s loose enough for them to feel comfortable in.

Generally, you want to pick a collar that’s a couple of inches larger than their actual neck size. You can measure your dog’s neck using a measuring tape to get a good estimate. Be sure to get the next largest size, and not the next smallest size, if you can’t find a collar that fits perfectly. You do not want to make your dog feel uncomfortable at all costs.

Types of Dog Chains

Training collars

Training collars, also known as choker chain collars, are primarily used for training or disciplining dogs. They are used by dog owners as a quick and effective means to prevent them from being too active on a leash. The way choker collars work is that they punish active behavior, tightening the collar if the dog tries to run away from its leash or chain. Once the dog feels the backlash of force, they will become more hesitant to be more active again in the future, at least so long as they’re wearing the collar.

This type of training isn’t exactly favored by dog trainers and owners, especially newer ones. They argue that there are safer and less painful ways to teach pets discipline. As such, these sorts of trainers and owners use other types of collars and even go for headcollars instead of neck collars as it puts no stress on their dogs’ necks whatsoever.

Aesthetic chain collars

Aesthetic dog chain collars are simply collars made out of chains. Like leather or cloth collars, chain collars are simply worn around the neck and don’t actively try to choke the dog. They won’t budge when the dog tries to pull on it, so they will feel a little uncomfortable when trying to run away from a leash, but it’s not nearly as painful as wearing a choker.

These types of chain collars are usually worn by big dogs, as chains and big dogs go really well together. However, some owners of small dogs may also prefer this style, and they can definitely have their own dog wear chains, no matter how silly they may look to others.

Chain Collar Price Range

With many dog chain collars made out of stainless steel with 18K plated gold, you’d think that the price of chain collars would be high. However, this isn’t exactly the case. Choker training collars cost around $10, whereas the gold-plated designs go for only around $20-$30. This is definitely an affordable purchase for the average pet owner, though it’s more expensive than a typical leather collar, for example.

Let’s begin with the original chain collar – the training collar. This type of collar was popularized in the past for being an effective tool to train dogs with, but these days, many dog owners opt out of using them. The chains are designed to tighten up if the dog tries to move too far away from their leash, which makes them less active and aggressive as a result. However, many owners do not prefer this type of training, and would rather use clickers and treats instead to enforce discipline.

Key Features

At the end of the day, however, you decide on how to best train your dog, and no one else. These chain collars are effective and can be an easy way to keep your dogs disciplined without too much effort. Note that the chains do not come in different colors, but they do come in different lengths to help fit any breed.
