Tips on how to train a large dog
When you welcome a large dog into your home, it can be comforting having the extra security on your property and the love of your four-legged friend. Unfortunately, you may find the dog is prone to chewing on furniture or barking throughout the day and night. It’s important to follow a few tips to train your dog in order to ensure their behavior improves to respect your authority.
Establish the House Rules
Create a list of house rules you may want to implement so you can decide what your pet can and can’t do. There may be certain rooms of the house which are off-limits or a specific area where the dog needs to sleep. Establish the rules early on to avoid confusion with your dog.
Respect Your Dog’s Name
Choose a name you love for your dog and learn how to respect it. Part of training a large dog is using it to train the animal and help them to understand when you need its attention. Opt for a name which is short and ends with a strong consonant to ensure it’s easy to understand. Using their name consistently can help the dog learn when they need to respond and will make the training process easier.
Reward Good Behavior
As your dog learns how to shake your hand or use the bathroom outside, you’ll want to reward their good behavior to reinforce the training they’ve learned. Use dog toys, treats and even hugs and kisses to communicate you’re proud of their behavior. Getting rewarded will prompt them to repeat the acts in the future.
Discourage Biting and Nipping
Larger dogs are prone to biting and nipping, which should be scolded each time it occurs. If you want your dog to learn it’s a negative behavior, act like you’re in a lot of pain each time they bite you. They’ll be surprised by your pain and will immediately discontinue the habit. If your dog is prone to chewing or nipping, give them a dog bone or a toy to use instead to keep it under control.
