Walking your pup can be an enjoyable experience, but it can also be a bit of a challenge. Not only do you have to make sure you keep your pup under control, but you also want to make sure you have the right tools to do so. That’s why it’s important to invest in a quality leash, like one of the best retractable dog leashes of 2024.
Retractable leashes make it easy to give your pup just the right amount of freedom while still keeping them in check. Not only do they allow you to adjust the length of the leash, but they also come with a range of features to enhance your walk. In this post, we’ll review some of the best retractable dog leashes on the market and offer advice on how to make the most of your purchase.
If your dog is a puller like mine, you know all too well how vital a good leashing system can be to keep him nearby during your walk.
But with so many options on the market, it can be difficult to choose which retractable dog leash is best for your pup. I know I’ve been overwhelmed before!
Fortunately, our team is here to help. We‘ve written this handy guide to choosing and using retractable leashes to ensure you get the most out of your money.
If your dog is constantly moving and ready to explore, he may need a retractable leash. This will allow him to explore more without dragging you along for the ride.
Some retractables have a plastic grip on the handle to keep it from slipping out of your hands. This can be handy if you have particularly short or tall dogs.
We asked Dr. Bethany Hsia, a licensed vet, how to safely walk a dog with a retractable leash. Here’s what she said:
“Always be aware of your surroundings when using a retractable leash. Look out for potential hazards such as other dogs, people, or obstacles that could cause your dog to run into danger.”
She also added that you should train your dog. “Before using a retractable leash, make sure your dog is trained to walk on a leash and respond to commands,” she said. “This will help prevent them from running off or getting into trouble.”
Retractable leash prices have a wide range from $20 to $200. However, most should be under $30 These products are largely made of plastic and tend to be high-quality and durable.
Most retractable leashing options start out around $20. At this price, you’re likely getting a lower-grade leash that may not have as many features, but should still work just fine.
For $40 to around $100, the products usually include higher-end features, such as additional retractibility features and tethers that extend the length of the leash.
If you spend over $150, be sure to get a retractable leash with all the bells and whistles, including color-coded retracting mechanisms and extra tether attachments.
The weight of a leash will dictate the ease with which you can carry it. You need something lightweight and easy to handle.
This will determine how far out your dog can go exploring. Mine like to go far ahead of me, but this may not be as applicable if you live in a crowded area. Dr. Hsia added contributed to this topic:
“Retractable leashes come in different sizes and lengths, so choose one that is appropriate for your dog’s size and weight. A leash that is too long or too short can be dangerous.”
Most retractable leashes have a plastic grip and a nylon leash. The plastic provides a comfortable grip, and the nylon is able to reach far out to follow your dog’s wandering path.
Comfort is one of the more important features to look for in any retractable leash. When taking your dog for a walk, you want to be sure that your hand doesn’t cramp up, especially if your dog is tugging.
The first thing you’ll want to do is find out the length of the leash that your dog should have. This will vary depending on your size, so you need to research this before buying.
Smaller dogs typically need a leash no longer than 6 feet, while large dogs need leashed lengths of at least 10 feet.
The next thing to consider is the maximum weight your pup can carry. Some leashing systems are designed to hold just any amount of weight, and some are specifically designed not to allow the dog to over-haul. You’ll then need the correct type of harness for your particular dog.
There are two main types of retractable leash systems: clip and harness.
A clip leash system is basically a long leash clipped onto a harness or collar that fits your pet’s neck. In most cases, it’s easy to adjust the clip so your pooch can pull at the collar, but it can be more difficult to remove from the harness if your little guy starts to get a little too carried away.
On the other hand, a full harness system has a wide collar with a heavyweight sewn into it. These kinds of leash systems tend to be better for big dogs who need lots of physical effort to pull. However, with this type comes a high price tag.

A: A retractible dog leash can be retracted (usually between 5 and 15 feet) to allow your pooch or dog companion easier access to go for a quick pee. They’re popular for dogs who need to urinate outside but don‘t want to risk the leash getting on the ground, as they are much lighter than standard leashing systems.
A: Retractables are generally easier for pet owners to use. If your dog tends to get into mischief, retracting the leash offers more reassurance that your pet won't get away. The retract system also gives you more control.
A: In general, harnesses are safer than collars with a retractable leash. If the dog tugs agains the leash, then this could damage their neck with a collar. With a harness, however, the pressure would be against their chest and ribcage.
A: Retractable leashes are best for uncrowded areas or your yard. That way, your pup can explore without you having to follow him every step of the way. But taking a retractable leash in a very crowded area can be dangerous, as the cord can wrap around legs.
A: Retractable leash lengths range between 10 and 26 feet, but 16 feet is the most common. Sixteen feet gives your pup enough freedom and space to roam without allowing them to wander too far.
